A Photo Every Day - One Month In
Wanting somewhere to publish longer form stuff resulted in creating this blog. Social media doesn’t feel like a good platform for such things - it feels too throwaway - your soul leaving the timeline seconds after posting to be replaced by ads and suggested posts. Here I can publish and retain ownership of my photos and ramblings. I’m sure the social media machine of comments and likes is an invaluable tool for some, but I’m not here for the likes, if nobody ever reads this thats just fine by me - it’s still mission accomplished.
Anyway, I digress. Part of the blog idea was to include a photo diary - a reason to reacquaint myself with the camera, not a phone with a camera (although some of these photos will undoubtedly be taken with a phone), but an actual camera carried with the intention of taking photos. So, that’s how this all started - and how’s it going after one month? In short, it’s hard.
Conceived with a week away from work imminent, about to jet off to sunnier climes for some much needed relaxation, I had the time and varied locations to help me get back into the habit of taking photos. And yes, to start it was easy. Taking a few snaps each day and picking one that I liked the best. Not a curated feed of someones idea of perfection, just take some photos, pick one and post, that’s was it. Easy.

But now, back in the everyday it’s not so easy. Suburban living and remote working means often seeing the same things everyday, the same uninspiring streets on the daily walk, and early spring often offers up the same dull cloudy skys. A couple of times it’s reached late evening and a photo still hasn’t been taken, resulting in looking around the house for some abstract photo opportunity. Hmmm.
Anyway, I’ve made it a month, and I’ll keep trying to get at least that one photo a day, however it also feels like there is an alarm bell going off. A realisation that grinding out the days the same way every day - a life of remote working in relative isolation - is maybe not living life at all?
